Tell us a little something about yourself & your blog.

My name is Mandy and I recently relocated from the mountains of Montana to the hills of Virginia. I started a blog this December because I really enjoy writing and I wanted to hopefully connect with the growing minimalist community. Learning and sharing with others is such a great way to grow in this “practice”.

How did you discover Minimalism?

Probably Googling something like, “How do you make your life better?” I didn’t realize minimalism was such a sub-culture, and I found several great blogs from people detailing their own experiences of minimizing and it was all so inspiring.

How have you introduced  Minimalism into your life?

It’s definitely been in stages and is always an on-going process. While I love hearing about people who literally canned all their stuff and started from ground zero, I’ve been more about reducing clutter, getting rid things I don’t ever use and sometimes saying good-bye to those keepsakes that just sit in totes in a closet. This year my goal is to dramatically reduce the amount of “stuff” I buy. I have this habit of buying things just because I can and not because I really need them. Extra money has always burned a quick hole in my pocket!

How has it changed your life for the better?

It definitely makes moving easier!! I’ve downsized a lot in the last 4-5 years and the extra space and lack of clutter is freeing. But this year I’m hoping to see a better financial return as I continue to weigh my future purchases with much more thought and intention.

What do your close friends and family think of your lifestyle? Are they supportive, perplexed or inspired by the changes you’ve made? Do they even know about it?

Most people don’t know about it really–mostly because any changes haven’t been incredibly drastic. But when I announced my goal for 2017 was not to buy anything this year my boyfriend, while supportive, was a little astonished. But we both agree that it’s great to reduce unnecessary purchases, and use our money for experiences like trips and vacations. It’ll be interesting to see how my goal plays out for the remainder of the year!

What are your hopes for the future and how do you plan to progress the lifestyle? Or are you happy just as you are right now?

I’m just focusing on this year and will continue to minimize my expenses, but I also plan to keep thinning the clutter that tends to build in our closets and kitchen (for some reason). I’m excited to see how everything will play out!  Thanks for letting me share!
